We all know that once the discomfort starts it is hard to focus on your daily tasks, because all you can think about is the pain which leads to distraction and minimizes your productivity for the day. Comfort at Work: The Importance of Proper Back Support

According to research, workers spend on average around five hours and forty-one minutes at their desks daily. Wow! That’s quite a bit of time that we spend sitting in one spot every single day. In spending this much time sitting at our desks it is important that our chairs offer maximum support. The more support we have while at our desks the more likely we are to use our time productively.

We all have fallen victim to that point in the day when we start to feel that dreaded pain. That slow aching feeling that starts at the base of your spine and works its way up. You struggle to find a comfortable position, yet no matter what you do you just can’t find relief. After shifting your weight numerous times you finally come to the resolution that the problem is a combination of your posture and office chair. It is quite common for us to sit in chairs that do not offer proper back support. So, what can you do to counteract the inevitable pain of the day? Evaluating the positioning of your office chair and your posture are two quick solutions that will help you begin the process of understanding the causes of your back pain.

  1. Office chair should be equipped with elbow supports and your elbows should rest comfortably on the supports at a right angle (90 degrees).

  1.  Make sure your back is aligned with the back of your chair. Try not to slouch or lean forward when sitting.

  3. Try to keep you arms flexed at a 75 to 90 degree angle.
  4. Make sure that your knees are even with your hips or slightly higher when sitting.
  5. Keep your feet firmly resting on the floor.
  6. Sit with your shoulders as straight as possible.
  7. Get up and walk around or stretch whenever possible. Paper Beats Cancer

St Jude Paper Beats Cancer banner ad_170x105As November is a month of thanks and giving BPS is promoting a campaign that is the epitome of these two words. The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Thanks and Giving campaign. This campaign allows children and their families to focus solely on treatment without having to worry about the costs.

According to Hammermill Paper’s press release, “St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. Created by Marlo, Terre and Tony Thomas – children of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas – the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign began as a holiday-focused fundraising effort and has grown into an annual tradition that has raised more than $387 million for research and treatment in the ongoing battle to end childhood cancer. Kicking off Thanksgiving week and running through the end of December, this year marks its 10th anniversary of asking the public to, “Give thanks for the healthy kids in your life, and give to those who are not.”

In 2011, Hammermill became a corporate sponsor of the Thanks and Giving Campaign and has raised more than $521,000 to date. Beginning November 1st, customers who buy select reams of Hammermill paper will see original artwork on the front of Hammermill reams, drawn by St. Jude patients.  Customers can also read the patient’s story on the back of the reams. Also, Hammermill Paper will donate $1.00 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for every new fan they receive on Facebook. Heating Things Up: Workplace Space Heater Safety

The use of space heaters within workplaces is quite common as employees try to stay warm during the winter months. However, it is important to remember the use of portable space heaters pose a potentially major workplace safety hazard. The incorrect use of space heaters within the office can lead to fires and let’s face it no one wants to start a fire at work! Here are a few tips that are important when using portable space heaters in your office.
The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers the following space heater safety tips:
  • Employees should be required to obtain approval from a supervisor or facility manager prior to using a space heater at work.
  • All space heaters should have the certification of an independent testing laboratory.
  • Proper placement of space heaters is critical. Heaters must be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including papers, clothing and rugs.
  • Locate space heaters out of high traffic areas and doorways where they may pose a tripping hazard.
  • Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, which could overheat and result in a fire.
  • Do not plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater.
  • Operating space heaters should never be left unattended. They should be turned off and unplugged at the end of the work day or whenever the employee leaves the room.

Tips for a Healthy Workplace

  • Conference Rooms: this area is rarely cleaned and contains numerous surfaces that individuals constantly touch such as tables and chairs. Also, an area where food is consumed makes it a breeding ground for germs!
  • Desks: Huge breeding ground for germs! Studies show that your desk can be covered with parasites, fungus, and bacteria/viruses that can cause colds and flu.According to a Kimberly-Clark Professional study your desk contains 400 times more germs than an average toilet seat.

2. Keep things Sanitary 

  • Breakrooms: It is important to have anti-bacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, and other cleaning materials that are easily accessible. Remember the saying “out of sight, out of mind?” People are more likely to wipe up/clean up after they have finished eating if these items are in their line of sight. 
  • Conference Rooms: Since these areas are rarely cleaned it it key that if you are going to have lunch meetings that you disinfect these areas after each use. This will help tamp down on the spread germs.
